Revenge of the Poker Nerds: Online Hero Tops Toughest Final Table of 2008 Series So Far
CuraƧao, Netherlands Antilles (PRWEB) June 18, 2008 - Score one for the Internet poker nerds.
At what was possibly the toughest final table in World Series of Poker* history, high-stakes online poker hero Phil "OMGClayAiken" Galfond captured the biggest title of PokerListings.com's live 2008 series coverage (http://www.pokerlistings.com/live-tournaments/wsop) so far in Event 28, $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha w/Rebuys, outlasting famed poker icons Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, John Juanda and Johnny Chan.
To rub a little more salt in the eyes of the live pros - who aren't shy when it comes to knocking the Internet poker "nerds" - on top of the $817,781 Galfond earned for his victory the runner-up money, worth $493,748, also went to a player known more for his online prowess, Adam "the_houdini" Hourani.
Galfond, whose bread and butter is the nosebleed $200/$400 Pot-Limit Omaha tables on Full Tilt Poker, explained in his PokerListings.com post-win interview (http://www.pokerlistings.com/poker-player-interviews/wsop/2008/omg-he-did-it-the-phil-galfond-interview) he wasn't particularly surprised it came down to two Internet players:
"It was kind of cool that some of the biggest winners online...how well it translated to the results of this tournament and I think that was due to the great structure. It was moving so slow, and there is so much play in these new tournament structures. I think I just feel that it made the win more important," said Galfond.
The other major headline grabber on Day 18 was a famed poker pro pretty familiar with drawing the cameras to his table - former Main Event Champ Scotty Nguyen, who pulled out another classic Scotty moment in Event 31, $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em Six-Handed.
Double-fisting Michelobs throughout the last few levels of play, Nguyen got his entire stack in the middle - in a rather sloppy pile no less - in a hand against relative unknown Brent Hanks with the board showing 8-8-4.
The decision was on Hanks to call for the rest of his chips. Scotty, cackling incessantly, ripped a $100 bill in half and tossed one piece to Hanks. "Here's $50, make the call and you get the other half," he said with a laugh.
Shaking his head, Hanks eventually announced call and Scotty turned over the 8-10 of clubs for the set, busting Hanks from the tournament. He then let loose with a barrage of cruel-hearted laughter that prompted one neighboring player to proclaim, "You're going to hell, Scotty."
